I was born on December 30, 1953, to wonderful, hard working, Christian parents, Frank and Laura Mullins, in Grundy, Virginia. My father was a service manager at a local Chevrolet dealership, and my mother owned an upholstery shop. My father passed away in 1975 and my mother, now 82, is still doing some light work in her shop. I also have two brothers and a sister.
My business career started at the early age of seven, when my older brother, Larry, and I would go to Grundy and shine shoes. Later, at the age of twelve, I started working at a local grocery store, where I learned a lot of my work habits. The owner of the store, George Wright, once told me, “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.” That phrase has been my “motto” to this day. At sixteen, I had saved enough money to buy my first car, a 1969 Opel Rally. That was when my love for automobiles really started. I had worked hard earning the money to purchase this car and I knew that I had to take care of it for it to take care of me. I have two sons, Chad and Dusty. Chad works as a Juvenile Therapist, and Dusty is the Past President and Alternate State Director of District 8. He is also the manager of our second lot.
In my late teens, while finishing high school and starting college, I worked three part-time jobs; I helped my uncle, Herb Mullins, with his parts store and glass shop, I helped my parents in the upholstering shop, and I played drums in a rock band.
After attending college and getting a basic degree in banking, I worked at a local bank until 1978 when I resigned to operate B&B Motors full time, which I had opened in 1977. My business has grown from a rented lot with a small office trailer and five or six car, to two retail lots with a total inventory of over 70 vehicles.
I have been a VIADA member since I opened in 1977. I have served as a Treasurer, Vice President, and two terms as President for District 8. On the state level, I have served as a State Director since 1998, and had the privilege of serving as President of VIADA. I have also have served as the Chairman of the Member Benefits, Membership Development, and Government Relations Committees while working through the State Officer position.
I have been very active in my church and community. I have participated in several foreign mission trips traveling to eight different countries. Locally, I have been “Santa” for the Head Start and public school system for the past 20 years.
For the past several years I have seen what VIADA does for our industry and its members. I thank those of the past, present, and future for the time and effort they have contributed to VIADA and the industry we love so much. |
